The Old Croft
The old croft at Hillhead was built on higher ground above the main farm in the 1860’s. At the top of the hill there are the remains of three large burial cairns. The stones used to build the croft were probably taken from these cairns.
In those days the rent was just one pound and ten shillings per year. Water was provided by a well just below the croft.
Around 1900 a modest house was built next to the the old croft. The rent for the two buildings was five pounds and ten shillings per year which no doubt reflected the improvement in facilities.
By the 1920’s the rent had fallen back to one pound and ten shillings per year.
The house was briefly let to a separate, second tenant for one pound per year before it was abandoned and fell into disrepair in the 1930s. The croft itself was abandoned during the second world war. The land itself continued to be used for grazing until 2018.
